The Fillmore in Detroit, Michigan on October 1, 2026

Alcest opened the show. I had never heard of them before. Musically and sonically, they fit in well on a tour with Mastodon. Their tone was also a bit reminiscent of Dream Theater at times. I will need to check these guys out some more.

Deafheaven was next. I saw them twice on their tour with Lamb of God and Anthrax about ten years ago. I remember liking them, but I had forgotten how good they were. Holy cow, they were killer. They were super heavy with tons of live energy. Two thumbs up.

Mastodon headlined. I love the thrashy section in the middle of “Megalodon.” The newer song “In the Ruins” was another highlight. I actually prefer the songs that Brann sings lead on. So, “Steambreather” was excellent. “Poisonous Weapons” was another newer song that stood apart. For the final seven songs of the set they brought out John Baizley from the band Baroness to jam with them. Actually, the first time I ever saw Baroness was when they toured with Mastodon and Between The Buried and Me on the Crack The Skye tour. “Oblivion” may have been the fan favorite, but for me “The Czar” was the highlight of the evening. That song is just all over the map musically, and I love it. They said they were going to end their set with the love song “Blood and Thunder.” When the show was over, Brann talked to the crowd about the band’s history playing in Detroit, thanked the audience again, and passed out drum sticks. Mastodon is a group that really sets themselves apart by having each member of the band be an incredible musician at their instrument. That’s what keeps me coming back to their shows. Very few rock or metal bands around today can play like that.
